Marney Extends Burnley Stay

Dean Marney has signed a new two-year deal which secures his future with the Clarets until the summer of 2017.

The midfielder, 31, is nearing full fitness after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in February, and is delighted to have sealed a new deal at Turf Moor.

“I’m over the moon to secure my future for the next couple of years,” said Marney, who has been with the club since 2010.

“I love it here. If it was for five years to stay here then I would have signed that.

“I’ve said from day one, it’s a great club and the last few years have been great years for myself personally and for the club so I obviously just want to be a part of the future. I’m really looking forward to the next two seasons.”

The former Tottenham trainee picked up the injury in the 2-2 draw with West Brom last season, and is confident of a return to the fold in the not-too-distant future.

He said: “It’s progressing really well. I’m quite a bit ahead of where I thought I was going to be at this time.

“I had a tiny little set back which has maybe added on a week or so but I’m hopefully playing a game on Tuesday and then crack on from there really.

“With the injury that I’ve had being a serious one, you’re going to get little niggles. I’ve Vokesy to talk to and he’s said that it’s normal and just part and parcel of the injury really.

“I want to put myself in a position where the gaffer sees me and says right, he’s ready and then crack on from there really.”

But Marney is aware of the task he faces in breaking back into the side, with the team on a four-game winning streak.

“Obviously the lads are doing well at the minute and I know that it’s going to be tough to get back in the side, but I’m working hard at the minute,” he explained.

“I think you look at the squad now compared to the squad that went up before, there’s a lot more competition for places now than there was then.

“Obviously then the squad was a lot smaller, you look at the other night and how strong the bench is and there are players to come back to fitness.

Marney hopes to step up his preparation with two development squad games next week, but insists that he does not have a return date in mind.

He added: “I’ve not set myself any targets really. We’ve got the international break coming up so that will be another week, I just want to get back as soon as possible really.

“As long as I can show the gaffer that I’m ready then obviously the ball will be in the gaffer’s court.

“I’m really happy to sign and I just can’t wait to get back fit now and back playing.”
