Match Report: Buxton 0-4 Chesterfield

Chesterfield recorded a second win in two evenings with a 4-0 victory over Buxton, ahead of their training camp in Portugal next week.

First half goals from Daniel Jones and Jay O’Shea put the Spireites in the driving seat before trialist Jake Orrell and Mani Dieseruvwe confirmed the win, leaving manager Dean Saudners happy with the pre season progress of his side.

Similarly to the Matlock match on Thursday evening, Saunders fielded a side of first time regulars in the first half before affording game time to trialists, youngsters and fringe players after the interval.

Again Sam Morsy captained the side, perhaps providing an indication as to who Saunders sees as his leader for the coming season.

After a shaky start which saw Buxton almost capitalise on a Dan Jones slip, Chesterfield found their rhythm and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake came close to converting an Gboly Ariyibi cross from the left, prompting a low safe by Buxton ‘keeper Phil Barnes.

Further attacking moves from the Spireites saw Ariyibi and Gardner breach the full backs providing several quality crosses to test Buxton’s defence.

Morsy produced a pin point delivery on 13 minutes for Gardner to head towards goal, but former Blade Barnes saved well and Ebanks-Blake’s rebound prompted a second good save from the ‘keeper.

Ebanks-Blake looked a danger in the box with his power and awareness allowing him to both tee off others and find the target himself.

O’Shea capitalised on one such move on 21 minutes after after Clucas found the striker who laid off the Irishman, only for his effort to fly wide.

Jones broke the deadlock on 25 minutes with a powerful drive from the left flank, his shot leaving Barnes unable to prevent the ball trickling beneath his body.

Buxton provided more of a competitive edge than Matlock, having already faced Alfreton in their pre season campaign as Ariyibi continued to impress down the right flank.

Chesterfield should have converted more of the attempts resulting from Ariyibi’s enterprise from the wing, before O’Shea calmly slotted home from an Ariyibi cross on 37 minutes.

Ritchie Humphreys again led a team of trialists and youngsters out for the second half, with Charlie Raglan partnering Michael Onovwigun in the heart of defence.

A trialist who had featured in midfield against Matlock filled in at left back and impressed again, demonstrating calmness and composure alongside speed on the overlap with a sweet left foot delivering several crosses to dangerous areas.

17-year-old forward Orrell converted from Armand Gnanduillet’s delivery across the face of goal just after the restart to add a third for Chesterfield.

Spireite supporters saw more of new-signing Rai Simons whose pace caught the eye in his role up front alongside Dieseruvwe.

And it was the striker taken from Sheffield Wednesday in January who rounded off a comfortable evening for Chesterfield with an individual effort from distance which left the ‘keeper rooted to the spot.

After the match Dean Saunders gave his verdict on his side’s start to pre season. The 51-year-old said: ‘There were no injuries and that was the main thing. I’m really pleased with them, we looked like a team out there today.

‘We’ve got a lot of good young players and good athletes as well, they’re big strong lads who can run and they can play as well. I’m pleased, the football we played was great.

On the trip to Portugal, for which the squad depart on Sunday, the manager said: ‘We’ve got a good game on Friday so we’ll build up now towards that game, everything we do now will be aiming towards that game.

‘I’ll get to know the players. They’ll be in for training, we’ll be out there all together and we’ll get to know each other better and I’ll work with them closely every day.

‘We’ll work Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and then get ready for the game on Friday against a good Portuguese team and I’ll be looking to piece together my team now ready for the Barnsley game.’
